The Oldest Scout Troop in St. Mary's County, Maryland
Originally chartered 70 years ago, Troop 420 is celebrating their 55th consecutive year anniversary. Troop 420 teaches and guides boys from the ages of 12 through 18, taking them from elementary school age into adulthood. Providing life experiences in science, nature, community, religion, independence, decision making, responsibility, and personal growth. The boys are continually taught to hold true the 12 points of the Scout Law: A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.
As one of the largest troops in the area, Troop 420 has approximately 50 - 65 enrolled scouts and 20 registered adult leaders to assist in a well-organized "boy run" program. Monthly Troop Leadership meetings are a forum from which the senior boys plan and organize not only monthly outings but also weekly meeting goals, fundraisers, and quarterly Courts of Honor. The weekly meetings and campouts are all run by the scouts with adult providing guidance to aid the boys in achieving their goals. There is a very active older scout program of rock climbing, cave exploring, extended hikes, survival skills, and more to keep scouting fresh and challenging as the boys mature.
The Journey to Eagle Scout
For the scouts that focus on their goals and
work hard may obtain the highest rank in scouting, the Eagle Scout. For the
past 10 years Troop 420 has averaged 2 Eagle Scouts per every year. This is
four times the
national average. The adult leadership provides a dedicated Eagle Scout Counselor,
whose main focus is aiding the boys in obtaining this lofty goal. The rank of
Eagle Scout is truly a lofty goal.
Service to the Community
Troop 420 is committed to our community and we
believe that we must give back to the community for their wonderful support. To this
end, the troop participates in Scouting for Food with generally 2000 lbs. of food
collected each year, which is distributed by the St. Pauls Methodist
Church. We also attend Flag Day in the county seat of Leonardtown as a way to
show our community spirit. Each year, we perform a cleanup of the chartering
church's cemetery, as well as a number of community projects. A few projects include
such efforts as setting playground equipment, building elevated gardens, and building a
Peace garden at Carver Elementary School. The troop also helps to maintain trails at NAS
Pax River, and the nature trail at Hollywood Elementary, which included building 2
bridges. Service to our community is an important part of scouting and we take great
pride in doing our part to help.
Troop 420 High Adventure Program Older Boy
Program
This program is aimed at giving boys age 14 and up
new and exciting challenges that test their scouting skills and physical
endurance. At the yearly-planning meeting, the older boys select activities
that are harder and more demanding such as Cave Exploring, Rock Climbing, Rappelling,
Wilderness Survival Campouts, Extended Trail Hikes, Whitewater Canoeing, and even Mountain
Climbing. The Troop Adult Leadership has adult leaders with over 36 combined years
of experience in Rock and Mountain Climbing, providing a safe environment for the scouts
to hone their climbing skills. The Troop also has Adult leaders that are members of
various local grottos and the National Speleological Society and have over 12 years of
caving experience. Again, the adults focus on challenge, but in the safest
environment possible.
